Georgia is marking this year the 1,700th anniversary of the proclamation of Christianity as the state religion through a broad series of cultural and educational events, Imedi News agency reported.
The programme was finalised during a meeting of the joint commission of the Georgian government and the Patriarchate of Georgia. The commission is co-chaired by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Patriarch Shio III of Georgia.
The anniversary events begin on 26 May and continue extensively from 1 June onward with a wide range of cultural initiatives, educational programmes, academic conferences and student camps.
The celebrations will culminate on 14 October with the feast of Svetitskhovloba, dedicated to the Cathedral of Mtskheta, and will include a symposium titled “God, Homeland, Human Being”.
The Cathedral of Mtskheta is one of the most important medieval Orthodox monuments in the Caucasus. The present structure largely dates from the 11th century and is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The nationwide events are being organised in coordination with the Georgian government.
