Orthodox–Lutheran Dialogue Commission holds 19th plenary session in Cyprus, focuses on synodality and primacy

The 19th plenary meeting of the Joint International Commission for Theological Dialogue between the Orthodox Church and the Lutheran World Federation took place from May 19 to 24 in the city of Larnaca, Cyprus.

The theme of this year’s session was “Synodality and Primacy.” Representing the Romanian Patriarchate was Fr. Cosmin Daniel Pricop, Dean of the “Patriarch Justinian” Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest.

The meeting featured presentations on various subtopics related to the main theme and included in-depth theological discussions. Rev. Cosmin Pricop told the Romanian Patriarchate’s Newspaper that the dialogue explored distinct aspects of each delegation’s confessional identity and ecclesial tradition.

The commission is co-chaired by Metropolitan Kyrillos Katerelos of Krini (Ecumenical Patriarchate) for the Orthodox side, and Bishop Johann Schneider of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany (EKD) for the Lutheran side.

This international theological dialogue—officially known as the Dialogue between the Orthodox Churches and the Lutheran World Federation—has been ongoing since its inception in Espoo, Finland, in 1981.

The next preparatory meeting of the Commision will be held from 16 to 19 November 2025 at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg, France, hosted by the LWF.
