Orthodox Archdiocese to open addiction treatment centre in Suceava

Assistant Bishop Damaschin of Dorna proposed establishing an addiction treatment centre in the Archdiocese of Suceava and Radauti.

The proposal was made during a Synaxis (Assembly) of the Archdiocese’s abbots, abbesses and spiritual fathers on March 8, 2021.

The assistant bishop to the Archdiocese of Suceava spoke about the stages of healing addictions. He stressed that collaboration between Confession and specialized medical treatment is needed from the moment of chronicity.

In this context, His Grace proposed establishing a centre for the treatment of addictions, the Archdiocese’s website reports.

The Synaxis took place at Archbishop Pimen Hall at Suceava’s Archdiocesan Centre and had the theme “The spiritual father in the life of the monk and the monastery; the spiritual father in monasteries in the face of the challenges of the contemporary world.”

Archbishop Calinic discussed with the spiritual fathers of the Archdiocese the more special problems they encountered in Confession.

In difficult situations, a detailed discussion between the spiritual father and the believer is necessary. His Eminence Archbishop Calinic said that decisions taken for people’s spiritual healing must be made with the proper spiritual state, as exaggerations are not good.

Archbishop Calinic of Suceava urged the spiritual fathers to have a lot of attention, discernment and warmth during Confession and counselling adolescents and young people.

Also, the difficulty of pastoring Romanians who live at home and abroad was underlined. In dialogue with them, the spiritual father must use discernment through telephone or the Internet.
