New kindergarten in honour of Bishop Gurie Georgiu to open this autumn in Deva

Works are nearing completion in the Diocese of Deva on a project started by Bishop Gurie of blessed memory. A modern kindergarten with a capacity of 80 places will bear the name of the first bishop of Deva and Hunedoara as a tribute. Deva’s new bishop Nestor visits the site almost daily to supervise the final finishing touches.

The kindergarten was set up at the initiative of Bishop Gurie Georgiu after he observed an acute shortage of places in existing kindergartens in the area.

Construction began more than two years ago and was entrusted to the current diocesan bishop, His Grace Nestor, then an assistant bishop.

The project is now in the finishing and furnishing stage, Father Gabriel Miricescu, spokesman of the diocese, explained to Basilica.ro. “In the meantime, we are working on the authorization of the kindergarten, which is a laborious process,” he said.

“Our wish is for it to be a kindergarten of excellence, with extended hours and many extra-curricular activities, which will motivate parents to enrol their children,” Father Gabriel Miricescu added.

The building is about a kilometre from the Deva Diocesan Centre and has unique architecture, which is not very common for educational institutions.

Bishop Nestor goes to the construction site every day to oversee the works and make the necessary decisions: he discusses with the builders and designers. He decides what else is needed, fulfilling the heartfelt wish of his predecessor.

“Thus, the building of the kindergarten is a beautiful bond between the two hierarchs,” the diocesan representative added.

At the diocesan level, other projects are also underway, including the “Father Arsenie Boca” settlement in Deva, consisting of a monastery, an elderly care centre, a home for palliative care and a secondary school, and the establishment of several youth centres on the model of the Orthocaffé in Deva.

The Diocese of Deva and Hunedoara is the youngest in Romania. It marked its 12th anniversary at the end of last year.
