Montreal hosts 8-year celebration of Romanian Orthodox Diocese in Canada

Romanian Orthodox faithful in Canada celebrated the 8th anniversary of the Diocese of Canada from May 2 to May 10 at the Cathedral in Montreal.

During this period, a series of religious and cultural events were held. The festivities began on Friday, May 2, with the Vespers service, led by an assembly of priests and presided over by His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian. On Saturday, the Divine Liturgy and a Te Deum service followed.

The central event was the symposium titled “The Orthodox Church Today – Local Responsibility and Ecumenical Mission”, featuring lectures dedicated to the 1700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea, the newly canonized Romanian saints, and the centennial of the Romanian Patriarchate.

In his Sunday homily, Protosyncellus Corneliu Andrașco emphasized the historical significance of this year for Romanian Orthodoxy, recalling the 100 years since the Church was elevated to the rank of Patriarchate, 140 years since the recognition of autocephaly, and 1700 years since the Council of Nicaea (325).

Anniversary Reflections

The anniversary events continued with another edition of the symposium, focused on inter-Christian and ecumenical responsibility in the contemporary context.

Opening the formal reception, Bishop Ioan Casian noted:

“Today’s celebration belongs to all Romanians in Canada. It is the joy of a desire fulfilled in collaboration with God—a joy that also brings responsibility to us all.”

On Sunday, May 10, a large number of faithful participated in the Divine Liturgy, followed by performances by children, youth, and the “Datina Montreal” folk ensemble.

In his closing remarks, Bishop Ioan Casian underlined that the anniversary marks not only the fulfilment of a decades-long dream for Romanian Orthodox believers in Canada but also a shared responsibility to preserve their faith and identity:

“Today is a celebration of faith. A celebration that encourages us, as believers, with the joy of having our own Diocese. It has been 8 years since the dream of over 30 years—to have a Diocese representing us—was fulfilled.”
