International Symposium on the Culture and Spirituality of the Holy Mount Athos in Rome

“The healing sight. The miracle worker icons of the Holy Mount Athos between history and piety” was the theme of the 15th edition of the International Symposium on the culture and spirituality of the Holy Mount Athos organised in Rome – the official website of the Eparchy informs.

The event was organised Saturday, 14 May 2016, by Iniseme per l’Athos Association in collaboration with the Romanian Academy in Rome, with the working session held in the conference room of the Academy.

After the official opening, there followed interventions in large fields of research: historical, theological, artistic, etc. Then, some of the most beautiful and best known miracle worker icons of the Holy Mount were video shown and explained.

The Very Rev. Archimandrite Atanasie, Administrative vicar of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Italy, delivered a lecture on the miracle worker icon of the Mother of God – Prodromiţa from the Romanian skete of Saint John the Baptist. The psaltic group of Saint Dionysius Exiguous of the Diocese, conducted by rev. fr. Marian Jianu, performed a series of Byzantine chants from the Paschal repertory.

Many researchers, professors, clergy, as well as Romanian, and Italian lay people attended the event, willing to learn as much as possible about the richness and beauty of the Holy Mount Athos, an oasis of genuine international Orthodox spirituality.
