On Tuesday, his Eminence Metropolitan Nektarios of Kition visited some of Bucharest’s most famous religious landmarks.
After arriving from Cyprus, Metropolitan Nektarios visited the Palace of the Patriarchate and the Patriarchal Cathedral, where he venerated the relics of Saint Demetrius the New, Bucharest’s patron saint, and offered prayers for the repose of the souls of Romania’s former patriarchs whose tombs are inside the cathedral.
The Cypriot hierarch was accompanied by Răzvan Mihai Clipici, Director of the Culture subdepartment of the Culture, Painting and Restoration Department of the Patriarchal Administration, and Aurelian Nicolae Iftimiu, Director of the Basilica News Agency.
Metropolitan of Kition’s second destination was St Anthimos Monastery, where he was welcomed by the abbot Vicentiu Oboroceanu.
The Metropolitan visited the monastery’s main church, where he learned more about the life and works of St Anthimos the Iberian. He also visited the Library of the Holy Synod and the monastery’s museums.
The visit to St Anthimos Monastery was an excellent occasion to learn more about the 20th-century hesychast movement “The Burning Bush” and its personalities.
The Metropolitan of Kition is currently visiting Romania at the invitation of Hon Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Targoviste, who asked the Cypriot hierarch to join the celebrations of St Nephon, Patriarch of Constantinople (August 11).
The day continued with a visit to Radu Voda Monastery, where the Metropolitan of Kition was welcomed by the abbot Nectarie Șofelea. Metropolitan Nektarios venerated the relics of Sts Nectarios of Aegina and Ephraim of Nea Makri and was informed about the urban monastic life in Bucharest.
