Glasgow’s Romanian parish moves educational programs to new location

Non-formal educational activities for Romanian children in Glasgow have begun in a new parish school location, which was blessed last week by Archbishop-elect Atanasie of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the patronal celebrations of the “Presentation of the Lord to the Temple” Parish.

The event was attended by Andreea Ioana Berechet, Romania’s Consul General in Edinburgh, who donated educational materials, and Aurelia Nicoleta Titirez, Head of the Romanian Consular Office in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Prayers for Wisdom and Identity

The archbishop-elect offered prayers for the successful continuation of the educational programs and engaged in discussions with the children and youth attending the school.

He emphasized the importance of faith, culture, and traditions, highlighting the need for preserving Romanian national identity. As part of the feast day celebration, he also gifted the Romanian community in Glasgow with a relic of Saint Columba of Iona, who has now become the second patron saint of the church.

A Growing Romanian Community in Scotland

The “Presentation of the Lord” Parish in Glasgow was established in 2008 by Father Marcel Oprișan, who now serves in Bârsana, Maramureș. Since last year, the parish has acquired the church building where it operates.

The community also maintains one of the largest Romanian-language libraries in the diaspora, housing over 3,000 books across various fields.
