French Saxophonist and Orthodox Priest Claude Delangle conferred with honorary doctorate from Iași Arts University

On November 3, the Orthodox priest Claude Delangle, one of the world’s finest soloists and saxophone instructors, was awarded the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa by the “George Enescu” National University of Arts in Iasi.

Dr. Florin Fodor presented the “Laudatio” address. Rev. Prof. Claude Delangle praised the administration of “George Enescu” University for this prestigious award, but he also expressed thanks to his colleagues and partners.

“Honoured audience, I address you with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Iosif and His Eminence Metropolitan Teofan. You have undoubtedly observed the effect this honour has had on both my wife Odile and me,” Rev. Claude Delangle said, Doxologia reports.

“This title signifies the greatest accomplishment of my life. Personally, I do not believe I am deserving of this honour, but as a representative of the institution and my work, I accepted it as a professional obligation.”

“Therefore, I accept it in the name of all the colleagues and musicians I represent, as well as my fellow Romanian saxophonists, whom I much respect.”

“I thank you, Mister Rector, for this title that you conferred to me today and I bow before my predecessors who received this distinction from the University of Arts, a university named after the great composer George Enescu, a very dear to us Parisians, a man who honours Moldavia and the whole of Romania, but also the whole world of music,” the prestigious saxophonist said.

Father Claude Delangle is considered one of the best living saxophonists and a French saxophone maestro. He has played as a soloist with notable orchestras like BBC Radio London, Radio France, Radio Finland, WDR Cologne, Berlin Philharmonic, and Kii Tokyo.

He received several awards from the National Conservatory of Music in Paris and was appointed professor there in 1988, where he created the most prestigious saxophone school in the world.

Students from all over the globe want to study with him because he provides a diverse variety of multidisciplinary activities as well as the opportunity to engage with prominent current composers.

The world’s most sought-after saxophone teacher, Claude Delangle, was ordained a priest in 2021 for the French-speaking Orthodox parish of St. Germain and St. Clodoald in Louveciennes, which is part of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe.
