First Romanian to vote in Presidential Elections: Orthodox priest from New Zealand casts his vote

Voting will be accessible throughout the weekend at the initial polling stations established in the diaspora, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The initial station in Auckland, New Zealand, was able to operate at 01:00 EET due to the time zone difference.

Father Mihai Mircea Corpodean, the parish priest of the Romanians in Auckland, was the first Romanian in the world to vote in the presidential election.

“We pray to God for peace and quiet. We have every hope that things will get better,” he told Gândul.

“Here in New Zealand, we have neither a Romanian consulate nor an embassy. But we have the embassy in Australia and the consulate there, and we have enjoyed this facilitation of exercising our right as citizens.”

“May God grant that those chosen may be God’s householders and take care of the Garden of the Mother of God, which is our country. Romania needs dedicated people to support its development”, said parish priest Mihai Mircea Corpodean.

Voting in the diaspora

Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan are also conducting voting.

At 12:00 EET on Friday, polling stations were operational in European Union member states such as Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, and Lithuania.

To vote abroad, an identity document (passport or identity card, including provisional or electronic versions) issued by the Romanian state and valid on the day of the election is necessary.
