Bucharest marks 563 years since its first documentary attestation

On Tuesday, Bucharest marked 563 years since its first documentary attestation. On this occasion, several cultural events are organised under the title ‘Bucharest’s Days’.

Bucharest’s first documentary attestation dates back to the 15th century (on September 20, 1459) and it is a document by which Prince Vlad the Impaler confirmed a donation made to some feudal lords.

The chrysobull is kept at Bucharest Museum – Șuțu Palace.

In 1659, Bucharest became the capital of Wallachia during the reign of Prince Gheorghe Ghica.

Several events have been organised under the name ‘Bucharest’s Days’ to highlight the history of Bucharest this week.

For three days, water sports, workshops and cultural and other activities took place on Dambovita River’s stretch between Timpuri Noi and Mihai Bravu.

The Museum of Bucharest organised free guided tours which included presentations of outstanding personalities and important moments of the old Bucharest. The museum also opened a photo exhibition entitled ‘Years have passed 2022’ („Trecut-au anii 2022”).

Saint Demetrius the New is considered the spiritual protector of the capital of Romania. He was proclaimed as patron saint of the city by the Metropolitan Filaret II (1792-1793).
