On Monday, during events marking Romanian Border Police Day, His Grace Bishop Iustin of Maramureș and Sătmar conveyed a message of support and gratitude to those safeguarding Romania’s territory, values, and national security.
“Dear border police officers, you are not merely guarding a geographical territory, but defending a space of identity, faith, and values inherited from our forefathers,” Bishop Iustin stated.
“You are the guardians of our peace, dignity, and safety. And for this, the Church stands with you in prayer and blessing.”
The bishop highlighted the significance of border protection, noting that in Holy Scripture, borders are seen as sacred.
“As a servant of the Church, I tell you with full conviction: your work is not solely administrative or military in nature, but also holds a profound moral and spiritual dimension. In Holy Scripture, the borders of a people are regarded as sacred gifts, and watching over them is a duty of honour.”
Bishop Iustin encouraged border police to look to the future with confidence and faith, especially in a time when borders are threatened not only physically, but also morally and spiritually.
“We are living in times when borders are no longer threatened only physically, but also morally and spiritually. This is why your calling requires, more than ever, wisdom, discernment, and courage.”
Romanian Border Police Day is celebrated annually on July 24. The date commemorates the year 1864, when Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed the founding act of the “Coastal Guard Corps,” marking the beginning of modern border security in Romania.
