The Romanian Orthodox Cathedral in Saint-Hubert, Quebec, Canada, hosted a special tribute last Sunday to an inspiring family: Archpriest Emeritus Mircea Panciuk and his wife, Ileana, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in the presence of Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada.

Following the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Ioan Casian celebrated a Te Deum, a service of thanksgiving to God for His blessings.

The anniversary celebration highlighted the importance of faith, steadfastness and service in Christian family life.

On this occasion, Bishop Ioan Casian presented the couple with distinctions awarded by His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel on the bishop’s recommendation.

Honours for an exceptional family

Fr. Mircea Panciuk received the Faith and Communion Order in recognition of his outstanding work in defending and serving the Orthodox Christian faith, as well as his contribution to promoting the unity and public standing of the Romanian Orthodox Church nationally and internationally.

Presbytera Ileana Panciuk received the Orans Mother of God Order in recognition of her exceptional service to the Orthodox faith and her contribution to promoting Christian values.

The distinction was awarded in the context of the Romanian Patriarchate’s 2026 Commemorative Year, which highlights the role and contribution of Christian women in the life of the Church, family and community.

The couple also received a gift from Bishop Ioan Casian: an icon of the Holy Mandylion, depicting the Saviour’s face on a cloth, in remembrance of the first icon of Christ, traditionally regarded as not made by human hands.

The natural family, blessed by God

Bishop Ioan Casian spoke about family values and the inspiration the Panciuk family offers to those around them.

“The family, established through the union of a man and a woman in the Holy Mystery of Matrimony, is a sacred institution blessed by God,” the bishop said.

“Through their 60 years of marriage, Fr Mircea Panciuk and Presbytera Ileana have become a model of steadfastness, love and harmony, offering younger people an example worthy of following and a living testimony to the beauty of family life lived in faith.”

“Their example is a source of strength for us all, especially in today’s society, where the values and model of the Christian family are often put to the test,” the bishop added.

His Grace recalled that the challenges of contemporary life can give rise to doubts about the truth revealed in Holy Scripture concerning the family.

“The life of Fr Mircea Panciuk’s family shows us that a family can endure through the years and face life’s trials when it is built on faith in God, love for Him and His Church, and care and love for one’s neighbour,” the Bishop of Canada emphasised.

“The 60 years of marriage shared by Fr Mircea and Presbytera Ileana bear witness to steadfastness and dedication, offering a shining example to younger generations and encouraging us all to cherish and preserve the values of the Christian family.”
