Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese voices support for Romanians amid Northern Ireland unrest

The Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has expressed its support and solidarity with Romanians living in Northern Ireland amid recent outbreaks of violence and social tensions that have affected numerous individuals and families.

“The Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland remains in constant contact with representatives of the Consulate General of Romania in Edinburgh, the Embassy of Romania in London, local authorities, and Romanian communities in the affected areas, closely monitoring developments and exploring ways of supporting those facing difficulties,” the Archdiocese said in a statement.

The Church institution affirmed its readiness to provide assistance through its pastoral and charitable structures to those affected, should the situation require it, in cooperation with the relevant authorities and Romanian institutions involved.

The Archdiocese urged Romanians to remain calm, exercise discernment and responsibility, follow the recommendations of local authorities and avoid any situations that could endanger their safety.

“In these challenging circumstances, we encourage them to preserve hope, cultivate solidarity and mutual understanding, and remain in contact with the institutions and communities able to offer support and guidance. The Romanian Orthodox Parish in Belfast continues to be present among the Romanian community, providing pastoral care, counselling, and assistance to those in need.”

Call for an End to Violence

The Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland joined calls from civil authorities and local community leaders for an immediate end to the violence and the restoration of a climate of peace and mutual respect.

“As a Church, we believe that neither fear, resentment, nor violence can bring healing to a society. Only dialogue, mutual respect, justice, and solidarity can rebuild trust between people and restore peace to affected communities.”

“In these difficult days, we pray that God may grant peace and wisdom to all those involved, protect those in danger, comfort those living in fear, and strengthen the efforts of all who strive to restore peace and mutual understanding in Northern Ireland,” the Archdiocese added.
