Romanian Gendarmerie celebrates its patronal feast. Bp Varlaam: Don’t forget to pray to the guardian angel

On Monday, the Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop Varlaam of Ploiești celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church “of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel at the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Gendarmerie in the Bucharest.

In his sermon, His Grace spoke of the work of angels in the history of salvation and urged believers never to forget the presence of the guardian angels in their lives.

“The Saviour Himself tells us that every person has a guardian angel. He warns those who listened to Him to behave humanely and fraternally, with love, towards all people, even those whom in general we, the people, consider small or insignificant,” the Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop said, quoting the Gospel of Matthew: “Their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.”

“Therefore, we must behave respectfully, authentically, faithfully toward the angel who protects us, and also be mindful of our conduct toward our fellow men, for their guardian angels always see the face of Christ’s Father, Who is in heaven, and can ask punishments from God for our inappropriate behaviour,” the hierarch warned.

“Let us never forget to pray to our guardian angel, to the angel who protects the Citadel of Bucharest, to the angels who protect our Romanian nation,” he continued.

“May they take care of us in this difficult period of the pandemic, keep us healthy and help us move towards the moment when, with God’s help and through their intercession, we will be able to resume our natural daily life, with which we were accustomed until now and which we look forward to.”

The Patriarchal Auxiliary Bishop conveyed the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church to the Romanian Gendarmerie.

He officiated a memorial service for the gendarmes who sacrificed themselves to defend the country and the ancestral faith.

Bishop Varlaam offered the Romanian Gendarmerie an icon of Saint Demetrius the New. In exchange, the representatives of the Romanian Gendarmerie offered the bishop a copy of the institution’s protocol album.

The representatives of the Romanian Gendarmerie posted a message on their Facebook page:

Starting from the motto inscribed on the coat of arms of the Gendarmerie, Lex et ordo (“Law and order”), our institution’s ideal and duty have apparent similarities with what the Holy Archangels symbolize. The Holy Archangel Michael represents the law, being a defender of justice, and the Holy Archangel Gabriel symbolizes order and peace.
