Appeal to the European Academies

After two world wars turned into humanitarian catastrophes, the unleashing of a new armed conflict, following in the not-too-distant past, seemed impossible.

Decades ago, Nicolae Titulescu had come up with the solution to avoid violent confrontations: “When peace is threatened, it is not answered by war, but by the organization. of peace”.

And yet, an independent state neighboring Romania is subject to the specter of death by a great power that unleashes a blatant aggression, contrary to all international agreements.

The Romanian Academy, like all similar institutions, made up of scientists and creators of authentic spiritual values, is in principle against violence and strongly condemns the war unleashed by the Russian Federation against Ukraine.

Unfortunately, scientists do not have the capacity to stop the conflict, but the politicians in power have the decision of peace in their hands. Moreover, these leaders even have an obligation to do so out of respect for the peoples who have delegated their right to rule.

After the recent crises that have become overwhelming, we must move towards peace, a lasting peace that builds stable bridges of communication between all the peoples of Europe.

Scientists and people of culture are the ones who always discover ways of dialogue, regardless of the political values that their governments share. Science and culture are universal languages.

Therefore, the Romanian Academy initiates an appeal to all European academies, in order to create a continental platform of scientific communication, whose purpose is to identify the values, principles and aspirations common to all peoples, in order to maintain peace.

More than ever, an alliance of harmony-loving spirits is now needed, capable of urging the speedy cessation of war and the organization of peace.
