Bishop Macarie begins mission among glaciers in Greenland

Bishop Macarie Drăgoi of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Northern Europe arrived in Greenland on Monday, where he will spend a week celebrating the Divine Liturgy and baptising local people who wish to enter into communion with the Church.

In a message posted on the diocese’s Facebook page, the bishop said the mission is taking place under particular conditions.

“Among glaciers and vast stretches of snow and ice, we share the warmth and light of the Gospel of Christ the Saviour,” he said.

“Even though the land is covered with snow and ice, we hope that the hearts of people will be warmed by the grace of God,” the bishop added.

He also called for prayers for the missionary work being carried out in the region.

“Pray that here, in the midst of glaciers and the cold winds of Greenland, we may all become sources of grace and spiritual joy,” he said.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and is the largest island in the world.
