Explaining the meanings of the Gospel text on the eighth Sunday after Pentecost, His Eminence Metropolitan Ioan of Banat emphasized that “throughout the week, we are nourished with bread multiplied by God, but on Sunday, the Lord nourishes us with Himself.”
In his sermon, His Eminence Metropolitan Ioan elaborated on the meaning of the Sunday Gospel about the multiplication of loaves and fishes (Matthew 14:14-22).
Multiplication of God’s Gifts
The Metropolis of Banat reported that His Eminence participated in the Divine Liturgy at the “Descent of the Holy Spirit” Church in the commune of Checea-Română, Timiș County, together with his Assistant Bishop Paisie of Lugoj.
Metropolitan Ioan pointed out that God transforms, through grace, what already exists, multiplying His gifts: “Christ did not multiply the loaves out of nothing, but multiplied them from bread. At the Divine Liturgy, through the grace of the Holy Spirit, the bread becomes the Body of Christ.”
Additionally, His Eminence Ioan made an analogy with the fact that the Son of God “was incarnated from the Virgin Mary,” not descending “from nothingness.”
Children’s presence at the Liturgy
Speaking about the importance of children’s presence at the Divine Liturgy, His Eminence noted that “they are the living loaves that blessed mothers bring before Christ.”
“From this living bread, Christ, through the grace of His love, wants to make each of us children of God,” added the Metropolitan.
The Holy Communion: A Greater Miracle than the Multiplication of Loaves
Furthermore, the Metropolitan of Banat highlighted that the Sacrament of Holy Communion is “greater than the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves” because “at the Holy Altar, you partook of the Body of Christ, not bread, but the Body of Christ.”
“This Holy Sacrament of the Church will endure as long as the lamp and prayer do not extinguish,” His Eminence concluded.
Blessing of the New Church Bell
After the Liturgy, the new church bell, weighing 800 kilograms, was blessed. Additionally, Metropolitan Ioan awarded the “Cross of Saint Joseph the New of Partoș” to the parish priest, Gheorghe Cucu, for his fifty years of service and shepherding the faithful.
Visiting Elderly Care Centre
Metropolitan Ioan then visited the “Saint Nicholas” Elderly Care Centre of the Archdiocese of Timișoara in this parish and the new complex under construction, which is intended to support elderly individuals with special social situations and retired priests who are alone and without family.
