Hon Metropolitan Nifon: Health is a sacred gift, but often disregarded by man

Reflecting on the paralytic’s healing at Capernaum at the local cathedral on Sunday, Hon Metropolitan Nifon, Archbishop of Târgoviște, underscored the importance of health as a divine gift and the imperfect manner in which individuals occasionally approach it.

“Health itself is God’s great, blessed, and ineffable gift, which must be cultivated, protected, and honoured because it is sacred. However, people often scorn this magnificent gift by becoming slaves to sin,” noted the Archbishop of Târgoviște.

He further explained that illness is not only a consequence of sin but also part of a wise, profound, and mysterious divine pedagogy meant to guide human beings toward correction.

“Through illness, the Creator offers a new beginning, granting, along with healing, a silent yet firm call to transformation, humility, and salvation,” said Hon Metropolitan Nifon.

Christ Heals Without Judgment

His Eminence noted that Christ heals the paralytic in Capernaum without reproach: “The Lord does not judge the sick man, nor does He rebuke him, but instead, He offers the forgiveness of sins, the healing of both soul and body and the chance for a complete renewal of life—a new opportunity to live in the unending light of divine grace.”

“Man is in constant need of healing, forgiveness, and renewal from both illness and sin, especially today, when our world is plagued by excesses of all kinds, various crises, and, above all, by unjustified violence and wars, which deepen suffering and darken the sky of our hope,” concluded the Archbishop of Târgoviște.
