Renowned American actor, director, and producer Mel Gibson, best known for his film The Passion of the Christ, arrived last Friday at the Serbian Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos, where he was set to spend several days.
The information and accompanying photo were shared on the Friends of Hilandar Monastery (Пријатељи манастира Хиландара) Facebook page, citing the official Instagram account @hilandar_org. On Romanian-speaking social media, the news spread via the Sfântul Munte Athos Facebook page.
The Serbian-language Facebook page Свети Јован Претеча (“Saint John the Forerunner”) published two additional photos, quoting the filmmaker as saying:
“Nowhere have I ever felt such a powerful connection with God as I did here.”
Mel Gibson has frequently spoken publicly about his faith over the years. He has expressed a deep belief in the truth of the events described in the Bible, which inspired him to bring them to the screen, according to @hilandar_org.
Gibson was raised in a traditionalist Catholic environment and used to attend Latin Mass in a private chapel at his home in California.
Currently, Mel Gibson is preparing to begin filming his next religious epic, “The Resurrection of Christ,” starring Jim Caviezel, who also played the lead role in The Passion of the Christ. Romanian actress Maia Morgenstern will reprise her role as the Mother of God in the upcoming production.
