Consecration ceremony of National Cathedral’s iconography: Liturgical schedule

The events related to the consecration of the iconography of the National Cathedral in Bucharest, a landmark of Romanian spirituality, will take place on Sunday, October 26, 2025, according to the following liturgical schedule:

  • 07:30–10:00 – The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated inside the National Cathedral by a designated assembly consisting of three hierarchs from Bucharest, 67 priests delegated by dioceses of the Romanian Patriarchate, and 12 deacons. During the 2018 consecration of the Cathedral’s Altar, only hierarchs concelebrated, not priests.
  • 10:15 – Arrival at the National Cathedral of His All-Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch, and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
  • 10:30–12:30 – The Consecration Service of the Cathedral’s iconography will be celebrated by the two Patriarchs together with an assembly of 65 hierarchs, 70 priests, and 12 deacons. At the conclusion of the service, the Act of Consecration will be read.

Due to limited interior space, only 2,500 official guests will have access inside the National Cathedral during the Divine Liturgy and the consecration service.

In the square (esplanade) in front of the National Cathedral, 8,000 organized groups of pilgrims from dioceses across the country will be able to attend, following the service on large screens placed near the Cathedral steps.

Other faithful from Bucharest and beyond will be able to follow the service from outside the National Cathedral grounds, on additional screens set up across the street.

After the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy (10:00 a.m.) and the consecration service (12:30 p.m.), access for veneration inside the Holy Altar will begin in an organized manner — first for official guests within the Cathedral, then for organized pilgrim groups from the dioceses who attended the services from the esplanade (near to the Cathedral’s steps).

Faithful outside the Cathedral grounds will be able to venerate the Holy Altar on October 26, 2025, starting after 8:00 p.m., once the organized groups from the dioceses and official guests have concluded their passage.

Pilgrims will also be able to venerate in the Cathedral’s Holy Altar on October 27–31, 2025, including during the night.

On Monday, October 27, 2025, on the feast day of Saint Demetrius the New, Protector of Bucharest, a Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at the outdoor altar of the historic Patriarchal Cathedral, dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen, starting at 9:00 a.m.

The Divine Liturgy will be celebrated by His All-Holiness Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch, and His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel of Romania, together with all officially invited Orthodox hierarchs, and a limited number of priests and deacons.
