Cluj Metropolitan remembers anti-communist political prisoners at Gherla Memorial

On the feast of the Holy Forty Martyrs of Sebaste, the day the former anti-communist political prisoners in Romania are commemorated, Metropolitan Andrei of Cluj prayed for their souls at the monastic settlement at Gherla Memorial.

The memorial service for the anti-communist political prisoners was held on Cărămidăriei Hill, near the anonymous cemetery with common graves and was preceded by the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts marking the patronal feast of the Forty Martyrs Monastery at Gherla Memorial.

“On this day, we remember the political prisoners who suffered on all fronts of our country for their creed and the justice of the Romanians. Many remained there, never returned home and were crowned there in the dungeons where they confessed the Lord Jesus Christ,” the Metropolitan of Cluj said March 9, 2022.

“Looking at those who have suffered in communist prisons, we learn that without sacrifice, there is no crown. So then we, as much as we can, should make our small sacrifice, especially now during Lent,” the Metropolitan of Cluj, Maramureș and Sălaj noted.

The memorial service for the confessors who suffered in the communist prisons is part of the events organized during the Gherla Memorial Days.

The honour guard of the Mobile Gendarmes Group from Cluj-Napoca and the officers and non-commissioned officers of the Royal Romanian Gendarmerie also participated in the commemoration.
