Bessarabia Metropolitan: We are a Nation, a Church, a History and an Ideal

His Eminence Metropolitan Petru sent a message to clergy and believers on the 28th anniversary of the reactivation of the Orthodox Metropolis of Bessarabia.

“Twenty-eight years ago, we all witnessed and lived an act of justice, encouraged, supported and approved by the Romanian Patriarchate, by reactivating the historic Metropolis of Bessarabia, torn in the 1940s, in an abusive way, from the bosom of the Mother Church, by the occupants of the territory between the Prut and the Dniester,” the Metropolitan of Bessarabia wrote in a message published on the official website.

“We started timidly, with a few churches,” the Metropolitan recalled, “and today we are boldly approaching a number of 200 parishes and carrying out many activities and projects aimed at people, as the Saviour Christ teaches us.”

“At the level of planning, we want to evolve and make progress in terms of catechetical, pastoral and missionary activity in this space and to continue to cultivate the truth of Orthodox faith and justified belonging to the Nation, because regardless of speculation, we are a Nation, a Church, a History and an Ideal, together with the entire Romanian spirit.”

“We wish all the clergy and believers in the Metropolis of Bessarabia much health, spiritual joy and courage in confessing the truth of Faith and Nation; and from us receive hierarchical blessings,” said His Eminence Metropolitan Petru.

December 19 marked the 28th anniversary of the reactivation of the Metropolis of Bessarabia by the Romanian Patriarchate. The historic event took place on December 19, 1992.

The Diocesan Assembly established in Chisinau decided on September 14, 1992, to reactivate the Metropolis of Bessarabia, which had existed since 1925, being sanctioned by Royal Decree no. 1942 of May 4, 1925. It operated until 1944.
