Igor Belei, Executive Director of the Diaconia Social Mission of the Metropolis of Bessarabia, spoke in an interview about the institution’s evolution and future projects in terms of two decades of activity.
“Emotions prevail over numbers
Among other things, he presented the mechanism for analyzing the results of an implemented project.
“If we gave a child a chance to be born, if a hungry person has tasted today a hot meal offered by a young volunteer who is completely foreign to them, emotions prevail over the numbers.”
“Of course, we have professional impact measurement tools and team members who constantly monitor our intervention. These tools can certify the performance of all types of support. Although we have different impact criteria, specific to us is the fact that the answers we offer do not fit in the patterns and we do not justify the lack of intervention by the lack of procedure,” Igor Belei said.
He also explained the criteria for launching a new project. “Any project developed by Diaconia goes through the phase of prototyping, testing its efficiency and the viability of an idea. Subsequently, it turns into long-term action.”
“Most of the time, the project is a meeting of two realities: the need of the beneficiaries and our donors’ expectations. Thus, through a generative approach, we make sure that we value the wishes of the donors, the experience of the team and the social problem for which we are looking for a complex, professional answer.”
Asked what the Diaconia represents, Igor Belei mentioned that the institution is “the mirror of the social reality in Moldova.”
“And the social action of the Church is always necessary to complete the liturgy after the Liturgy. Starting from these elements, we will continue every day to walk the path to the vision we have assumed with the blessing of His Eminence Petru, Metropolitan of Bessarabia and Exarch of the Territories: An active society guided by Christian values, the result of permanent and coherent action of the Metropolis of Bessarabia through Diaconia, which represents the model of excellence in supporting our neighbour in difficulty,” he continued.
In 2021, marking its 20th anniversary, Diaconia launched a new campaign titled “For 20 years we change because we care.”
