Romanian Orthodox Archbishop celebrates Divine Liturgy at UK prison, offers Paschal message of hope

Archbishop Atanasie of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Bright Tuesday, at Maidstone Prison in Kent.

Attendees included Romanian nationals and detainees of various nationalities.

The archbishop explained that salvation is not limited by external circumstances, and that Christ brings peace and a new beginning to every person, emphasising the importance of repentance and rediscovering the meaning of life in the light of the Resurrection.

Inmates who participated in the service said the regular presence of a priest is an essential support and a source of hope. “Within these cold walls, for the first time, we felt that God had not forgotten us,” one participant said.

Ana Maria Almășan, Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of Romania in London, was also present at the service. She outlined available consular support and held discussions with those in detention.

Pastoral work in the prison is consistently supported by clergy of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, who provide religious assistance and moral support to all those who seek help.
