Thursday, 11 February 2016, academician Alexandru Vulpe was buried at Bellu Cemetery of Bucharest. The funerals of the former president of the Section of historical science and archaeology of the Romanian Academy were held in Mavroghenichurch located in Victory Square area.
The funeral service was celebrated by His Grace Varlaam of Ploieşti, Assistant Bishop to the Patriarch.
His Grace conveyed the message of condolences of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel which emphasised the multiple achievements of the brilliant Romanian historian and archaeologist, of which we render a fragment below.
“Academician Alexandru Vulpe was a faithful son of the Romanian Orthodox Church, having brought an important contribution, as member of the joint commission of the Romanian Patriarchate and of the Romanian Academy, to drafting the book entitled “Romanian Orthodox Monasticism. History, Contribution and Index” (volume I, published at BASILICA publishing house of the Romanian Patriarchate in 2014).
Now, when he has fallen asleep into the Lord, academician Alexandru Vulpe leaves behind a vivid and luminous memory of an erudite scholar devoted to the Romanian archaeology and history, whose precious contribution and deep thinking join for ever those of his outstanding predecessors.
We pray Jesus Christ Risen from the dead to rest his brilliant soul with the righteous, to allay the sorrow of the mourning family and of all those who knew, appreciated and loved him”.
Academician Alexandru Vulpe passed away Tuesday, 9 February 2016, aged 85. He had a prestigious scientific career at Vasile Parvan Institute of Archaeology of the Romanian Academy which he headed since 1999. He coordinated many archaeological sites in various parts of the country, implemented in extensive monographic works, in detailed or synthesis studies of the ancient and old history of Romania. In 2000 he was awarded the Romanian Star National Order in Commander Degree.
