The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Seaca village, Olt County, Romania, is set to be restored, preserving a place of worship more than 500 years old that once belonged to Cozia Monastery.
According to Poboru mayor Iulian Bărăscu, the church dates back to 1518 and has a rich history linked to important figures of Romanian history, AGERPRES reports.
“Tudor Vladimirescu, and it is said even Michael the Brave, stopped here in their time with their armies while passing through the region,” the mayor said.
“It was once a monastery of monks, though it has long ceased to be so,” he added. “We must preserve the traditions and everything left to us by our forebears, and I am glad the diocese has responded to our requests.”
Restoration Project Approved
The project submitted by the Diocese of Slatina and Romanați aims at structural consolidation, the restoration of the church painting, and the replacement of the woodwork, as the monument is in a state of deterioration.
Representatives of the Olt County Directorate for Culture said the monument is listed on Romania’s register of historic monuments and has been considered for restoration on several occasions.
Inspector Laurențiu Comănescu said the technical documentation for conservation and restoration has been approved at the national level and submitted for financing under the South-West Oltenia Regional Programme 2021–2027.
Potential Future Pilgrimage and Tourism Site
The church may also be included in a future heritage tourism route due to its historical significance and its location in a striking natural setting, surrounded by forest.
The restoration project aims not only to preserve an important monument of ecclesiastical heritage but also to strengthen the region’s cultural and spiritual profile.
