Ukrainian Ambassador visits Orthodox Vicariate in Sighetu Marmației to discuss community needs and collaborative projects

Last Friday, His Excellency Ihor Prokopchuk, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Romania, visited the Ukrainian Orthodox Vicariate of the Romanian Patriarchate in Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș County. During the visit, the two institutions identified potential collaborative projects.

Ambassador Prokopchuk also discussed with Vicar Nicolae Lauruc the needs of the Ukrainian community in Romania, the status of ethnic minorities in both Romania and Ukraine, and the importance of combating misinformation.

The meeting was attended by Boris Patraș, Secretary of the Ukrainian Embassy, Dean Petru Rahovan, and Father Marius N. Lauruc.

Meetings with Local Leaders

On the same day, the ambassador also met with Father Vasil Kolopelnik, the Greek-Catholic Ukrainian Vicar in Romania, Vasile Moldovan, the Mayor of Sighetu Marmației, and Lucreția Semeniuc, Principal of the “Taras Shevchenko” Ukrainian Pedagogical High School.

On Thursday, the day before, Ambassador Prokopchuk visited the Ukrainian House in Cluj-Napoca. There, he donated books to the institution’s library and spoke with representatives of Ukrainian refugees.

Supporting Refugees and Education

The ambassador informed attendees about measures taken by the Ukrainian Embassy in collaboration with Romanian partners to improve living conditions for refugees, with a particular focus on providing education to Ukrainian children in their native language, as noted on the embassy’s Facebook page.
