The iconographic ensemble of the Great Dome in Romania’s National Cathedral now features a mosaic representation of Psalm 18 of King David at its base:
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament proclaims the work of His hands. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.”
The Orthodox Creed (Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed) is also inscribed on the supporting ring of the dome as part of the iconographic design.
Progress updates, shared via the National Cathedral’s Instagram account, highlight significant advancements.

A huge effort
This year, the mosaic in the southern apse (depicting the Nativity of Christ in its dome) was completed, and work has commenced on the northern apse (where the dome will feature the Resurrection).
To meet the deadline for completion before the cathedral’s consecration in the fall of 2025, the team of mosaic artists expanded from 120 to 220 members, aiming to produce 340 square meters of mosaic per month.
Each artist is tasked with creating 2.1 square meters of mosaic monthly—a challenging goal often surpassed. Patriarchal advisor Father Nicolae Crîngașu, speaking on Trinitas TV, reported that the team sometimes achieves up to 420 square meters per month, reflecting “immense effort, dedication, and seriousness.”
