Small country, big heart: President Maia Sandu thanks Diaconia Mission for helping Ukrainian refugees

The Diaconia Social Mission of the Metropolis of Bessarabia published a letter from the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, who praised the organization’s involvement in supporting refugees in Ukraine. “We have shown that we are a small country, but with a big heart,” President Maia Sandu wrote.

“You, through magnanimity, care and openness, have offered refugees a welcoming and warm rest stop in Moldova, a safe shelter in our country,” the President of the Republic of Moldova highlighted. She said the generosity of volunteers across the Prut River had spread worldwide.

“The exemplary mobilization and the organizational capacity you showed during this period, together with other fellow citizens of ours, give me hope. I strongly believe that together we can change our country for the better, we can build a free, peaceful and prosperous society here, a welcoming and warm place, a corner of heaven, where one may want to live and build their future,” President Maia Sandu noted.

The Diaconia Social Mission is the philanthropic arm of the Metropolis of Bessarabia, a canonical entity of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The organization is a member of the Filantropia Federation, which brings together the philanthropic organizations of the dioceses of the Romanian Patriarchate.

Romania and the Republic of Moldova mobilized exemplary to offer support to refugees from Ukraine after the outbreak of war in that country.

An important part of the aid offered by the Diaconia Mission and the suffragan dioceses of the Metropolis of Bessarabia was realized with the support of the Romanian Patriarchate and the Romanian communities in the diaspora.
