Renowned theologians to gather in Bucharest for Symposium on the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea

Internationally renowned theologians and professors will participate in the symposium “The First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea (325): Orthodox Faith – The Foundation of Church Unity” organized by the Romanian Patriarchate from May 13 to 17 in Bucharest.

Distinguished Participants

The list of notable guests includes:

  • His Eminence Metropolitan Job (Getcha) of Pisidia (Ecumenical Patriarchate),
  • His Eminence Gianfranco Ghirlanda from the Faculty of Canon Law (Pontifical Gregorian University),
  • His Grace Bishop Maxim (Vasiljević) of Los Angeles and the Western American Diocese (Serbian Orthodox Church),
  • His Eminence Metropolitan Vasilios (Karayiannis) of Constantia and Ammochostos (Orthodox Church of Cyprus).

Other participants include:

  • Professor Christos Arampatzis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki),
  • Professor Pablo Argárate (University of Graz),
  • Professor Bogdan G. Bucur (St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, New York),
  • Father Ludovic Danto, Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Catholic Institute of Paris,
  • Archimandrite Zacharia Zacharou (Monastery of St. John the Baptist, Essex, UK).

Joining these distinguished guests will be clergy, professors, theologians, and researchers from Romania.

Program and Themes

The symposium, commemorating the 1,700th anniversary of the First Ecumenical Council, will open at the Palace of the Patriarchate on May 14, with the main sessions held at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest.

The event will address four major themes:

  1. The Nicene Creed and its Ecumenical Reception
  2. The Historical Context of the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea
  3. The First Ecumenical Council and the Liturgical Tradition of the Church
  4. The Importance of the Canonical Decisions of the First Ecumenical Council for Church Life

A Significant Year for the Church

2025 marks a significant milestone for the Romanian Orthodox Church, with several key festivities. Among the highlights is the consecration of the National Cathedral by the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Romanian Patriarch on October 26.
