NBR: Numismatic issues launched to mark 100 years since the Great Union

On 26 November, the National Bank of Romania will put into circulation a gold coin, a silver coin, and a brass collector coin for numismatic purposes, along with a brass commemorative circulation coin, dedicated to the anniversary of 100 years since the Great Union on 1 December 1918.

The coins have the following technical characteristics:

Obverse of the gold coin: an image depicting the Great Union in Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918; the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “MAREA ADUNARE DE LA ALBA IULIA” in an arc, the face value “500 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2018”.

Obverse of the silver coin: an image depicting the Great Union in Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918; the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “MAREA ADUNARE DE LA ALBA IULIA” in an arc, the face value “10 LEI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2018”.

Obverse of the brass collector coin: an image depicting the Great Union in Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918; the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “MAREA ADUNARE DE LA ALBA IULIA” in an arc, the face value “50 BANI”, the coat of arms of Romania, the year of issue “2018”, and the letter “N” inscribed in a circle, as a distinctive sign of the collector coin.

Obverse of the brass circulation coin: an image depicting the Great Union in Alba Iulia, on 1 December 1918; the inscriptions “ROMANIA” and “MAREA ADUNARE DE LA ALBA IULIA” in an arc, the face value “50 BANI”, the coat of arms of Romania and the year of issue “2018”.

Reverse (common to all coins made of gold, silver and brass): the portraits of Ștefan Cicio-Pop, Gheorghe Pop de Băsești, Iuliu Maniu, Vasile Goldiș and Iuliu Hossu, prominent figures who helped accomplish the Great Union; the inscription “100 DE ANI DE LA MAREA UNIRE” in an arc and the date of the celebrated event “1 DECEMBRIE 1918”.

The mintage is:

  • 200 gold coins;
  • 200 silver coins;
  • 5,000 brass collector coins with face value of bani 50;
  • 1,000,000 brass circulation coins with face value of bani 50.

The gold, silver and brass collector coins and the brass commemorative circulation coins, dedicated to the anniversary of 100 years since the Great Union on 1 December 1918, are legal tender on the territory of Romania.

The gold, silver and brass collector coins dedicated to the anniversary of 100 years since the Great Union on 1 December 1918 will be put into circulation, for numismatic purposes, through the regional branches of the National Bank of Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi and Timişoara.
