His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas issued a message of compassion and called for prayer on Thursday following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela, in which hundreds of people lost their lives, and thousands more were injured.
“In these days of trial, my thoughts and prayers are with the entire Venezuelan people, and especially with the Orthodox community in Caracas, whom God granted me the joy of knowing and shepherding throughout almost twenty-four years of episcopal ministry,” Metropolitan Nicolae said.
His Eminence also emphasised the deep spiritual bond he shares with the Romanian Orthodox community in Venezuela’s capital.
“This spiritual bond means that their sorrow is also our sorrow.”
The Church in Caracas
Metropolitan Nicolae mentioned that, unfortunately, the earthquake caused suffering to the members of the Orthodox community in Caracas.
“Nevertheless, suffering has entered many of their homes. Active members of our community, including Fr Antonio García, our chanter Gabriel Mercano and other parish families, are now mourning the loss of parents, close relatives and loved ones. We share in their grief and pray that the Risen Lord will grant rest to the souls of those who have fallen asleep and comfort to those left behind.”
His Eminence called upon all parishes and monasteries of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of the Americas to offer prayers for the victims of the tragedy.
Assistance for Those Affected
With the support of the Metropolis, the parish in Caracas will undertake charitable and humanitarian activities in the coming weeks, providing assistance in hospitals throughout the Venezuelan capital and supporting those who have been injured as well as families in need.
“This is the most beautiful witness of the Gospel: to remain close to one another when suffering appears greater than human strength.”
“We pray to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Physician of souls and bodies, to grant healing to the injured, comfort to the bereaved, strength to all those who serve and care for the suffering, and peace to the entire Venezuelan people,” Metropolitan Nicolae said.
He concluded his message by encouraging those affected not to lose hope in God.
“I entrust you all to the protection of the Mother of God and the intercessions of the Holy Emperors Constantine and Helen, the heavenly patrons of our community in Caracas, trusting that God will transform the tears of these days into hope and strength.”
