International holidays, September 21st: Day of Peace, Gratitude Day and Alzheimer’s Day

Three major holidays are observed worldwide on September 21st: International Day of Peace, World Day of Gratitude and World Alzheimer’s Day.

International Day of Peace

Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on September 21st. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

This year’s theme is ‘End racism. Build peace.’

World Day of Gratitude

The celebration of Gratitude Day started in 1965 in Hawaii when an international gathering decided that it would be a good idea to have one day per year to formally express gratitude and appreciation for the many wonderful things to be found in the world. Following the meeting in Hawaii, many attendees marked Gratitude Day on 21st September 1966 when back in their own countries.

Ever since then, the number of people celebrating Gratitude Day across the world has grown and grown.

World Alzheimer’s Day

The theme for World Alzheimer’s Day 2022 is “Know Dementia, Know Alzheimer’s.”

Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia that affects memory and impairs daily function. It is responsible for somewhere between 60% and 80% of dementia cases. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist, was the first to identify the disease while treating a German woman in 1901. The disease was named after him.

The condition is often regarded as a family disease due to the impact it has on those closest to the victim. Alzheimer’s ranks among the leading causes of death in the United States. There are no prevention measures and it has no cure, even the progression of the disease cannot be slowed.
