Banat Metropolitan reveals first icon of soon-to-be-saint Calistrat Bobu

During the diocesan assembly of the Archdiocese of Timisoara, His Eminence Metropolitan Ioan of Banat presented the first icon of Elder Calistrat Bobu, whose canonisation is being considered by the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Two years ago, the Holy Synod started the process of canonisation of several priests and monks who professed the Orthodox faith during communism. The proclamation of their sainthood is planned for 2025, when the Romanian Orthodox Church will mark its 140th anniversary of autocephaly and 100th anniversary of patriarchal status.

Elder Calistrat Bobu (1900–1975) was a famous missionary priest in Banat. He was born in Burdujeni (Suceava) and had his repentance at Sihăstria Monastery. Then, in 1942, he was sent as a missionary priest to Banat.

For 33 years, Father Calistrat was an ever-burning torch for the monks and believers of Banat. Because of the humility and gentleness of his heart, he received from God the gift of healing and expelling unclean spirits from people.

The diocesan assembly of the Archdiocese of Timisoara meeting took place at the Archdiocese’s headquarters in Timisoara on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Participants included Metropolitan Ioan of Banat, his assistant bishop Paisie of Lugoj, Diocesan Assembly members, the archdiocesan administration, abbots and abbesses, as well as other priests.

The event was preceded by a Te Deum service, officiated in the “Resurrection of the Lord” and “Saint Joseph the New of Partoș” church at the Metropolitan Residence.
