9 May 1928 – IOAN MEȚIANU, Metropolitan of Transylvania, was born in Zărnești, county of Brașov. Gymnasium studies in Brașov and Cluj, theological studies at Sibiu. Parish priest in Râșnov and Zărnești (1853 – 1874), archpriest in Zărnești (1858 – 1874), Assistant Bishop at Oradea (1874 – 1875), Bishop of Arad (1875 – 1898) and Metropolitan of Transylvania (1899 – 1916). He supervised as Bishop, and then as Metropolitan, the primary and gymnasium schools in the eparchies of Arad and Sibiu, sustaining in the Parliament of Budapest (Magnates’ House) their right to use the Romanian language in teaching; he supervised the eparchial periodicals “Church and School” in Arad and “Telegraful Român” in Sibiu; he had new buildings raised for the Theological – Pedagogical Institutes in Arad and Sibiu. He supervised the formation of young Romanian intellectuals, providing them with scholarships from the foundations of the Metropolitan See and of “Gojdu” Foundation the Metropolitan See administrated. During his pastoral service the present Metropolitan Cathedral of Sibiu was built (1902 – 1906). He passed away on 3 February 1916, in Sibiu.
