The 86th Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the United States of America took place in mid-July in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event was hosted by Holy Trinity Parish.
From Friday, 10 July, to Sunday, 12 July, the congress gathered clergy and delegates from Romanian Orthodox communities across the Americas for a programme that included conferences, liturgical services, and festive events.
Conferences on contemporary challenges
The congress commenced on Friday, 10 July, with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, followed by the official opening of the proceedings.
Metropolitan Nicolae of the Americas recalled the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and highlighted the significance of the blessing of the host church’s newly completed iconography, which crowned years of efforts to beautify the place of worship.
The congress featured lectures addressing issues relevant to the Church’s mission in contemporary society.
Fr Oliviu Petru Botoi of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Alba Iulia spoke about the moral and pastoral challenges of a secularised society. Fr Ionuț Vlădescu, a lecturer at Petre Andrei University in Iași, explored the relationship between artificial intelligence, technology and Christian discernment in pastoral ministry.
The opening day concluded with the traditional pastoral conference, during which participants discussed the challenges and future prospects of the Romanian Orthodox mission throughout the Americas.
Blessing of the church’s iconography
The final day of the congress was marked on Sunday by the celebration of the Divine Liturgy and the blessing of the iconography at Holy Trinity Church, attended by Bishop Ioan Casian of Canada.
Reflecting on the Gospel account of the healing of the paralytic at Capernaum, Bishop Ioan Casian emphasised that “Christ is the One who forgives and heals. He is the One who accomplishes everything in the Church through the grace of the Holy Spirit,” adding that the faith of the community helps those who suffer draw near to the Saviour.
Speaking about the blessing of the church’s iconography, His Grace explained that it “represents a foreshadowing of the life of holiness, a longing for the lost paradise,” while a church adorned with icons becomes “an anticipation of what we shall fully experience in the Kingdom of God.”
“The iconography represents a foreshadowing of the life of holiness, a longing for the lost paradise, the place where Adam and Eve contemplated God’s creation and God Himself, and where they spoke with Him. It was the natural dwelling place of humanity, destined for a life of holiness.”
“The life of holiness begins here in the Church. The Church becomes a place where eternal life is already anticipated and prefigured,” Bishop Ioan Casian added.
Distinctions and celebrations
During the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Nicolae ordained Ioan Vaida, a member of the host parish, to the diaconate.
At the conclusion of the service, the Metropolitan spoke about the importance of the Archdiocesan Congress and welcomed the participation of delegates from newly established Spanish-speaking parishes in South America, highlighting the unity and missionary spirit of the Romanian Orthodox communities.
Several distinctions were also awarded to clergy and benefactors who had supported the completion of the church’s iconography. Bishop Ioan Casian received an engolpion to mark the 20th anniversary of his episcopal ordination.
The congress concluded with a festive agape meal and a cultural programme, bringing the 86th edition of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocesan Congress to a close.
