The Social Mission Diaconia expanded its activities across the Republic of Moldova throughout 2025, reaching 70 communities and mobilising more than 1,200 volunteers.
The social service arm of the Metropolis of Bessarabia supported 26,564 beneficiaries last year through 18 projects.
According to the annual report, Diaconia volunteers responded to local community needs, while community centres operated in five localities, benefiting more than 350 children through educational and recreational activities, including 75 who later became volunteers themselves.
Support for Mothers and Children
In the field of child and family protection, the In Mother’s Arms programme provided assistance to 26 mother-and-child pairs accommodated in the Maternal Centre, while another 11 pairs received support within their communities. In addition, 140 families facing temporary crises received aid tailored to their specific needs.
The Saint Anna Multifunctional Centre for Children and Families continued to provide services for refugees and vulnerable individuals. In 2025, 384 people received psychological counselling, 97 received legal consultations, and 743 refugee families from Ukraine, along with 419 families from the Republic of Moldova, received material assistance. The centre also hosted 211 children in its after-school programme.
The report also highlights the growing involvement of young people. Through the Ludobus project, 19 volunteers organised educational and recreational activities in 32 communities, reaching 2,005 children in rural areas.
More Than 44,000 Hot Meals
Meanwhile, the Close to Your Neighbour Mobile Social Canteen, with the support of 16 volunteers, distributed 44,240 hot meals at its two distribution points in Chișinău, continuing to serve as one of the organisation’s most important programmes for elderly and vulnerable people.
One of Diaconia’s most visible initiatives remains its Clothing Bank, which collected and distributed 157.7 tonnes of donated goods to 32 beneficiary communities in 2025, helping thousands of people in need.
In addition to its direct interventions, Diaconia also contributed to policy changes with nationwide impact. The organisation notes that its advocacy efforts to prevent food waste helped secure the introduction, beginning January 1, 2025, of tax incentives for food-sector operators who donate products to reduce food waste.
