The Diocesan Cathedral “Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple” in Madrid will undergo façade finishing and decorative works featuring elements specific to the Brancovenesque architectural style.
The project, entitled Highlighting the Brancovenesque Style: Natural Stone Ornaments and the Completion of the Façade of the Diocesan Cathedral in Madrid, is currently being implemented between 1 February and 1 October 2026 and is financed by the Department for Romanians Everywhere, an institution subordinated to the Romanian Government.
The project includes cladding and finishing works on the cathedral façade using natural stone ornaments. These works involve the crafting and installation of a decorative stone belt, stone frames for windows and doors, rosettes bearing the monogram of Jesus Christ, and the framing of the cathedral’s central mosaic.
The initiative also includes finishing the entire exterior surface of the building by applying a special exterior mortar and painting the façades, intended to ensure “the protection, durability and aesthetic unity of the edifice”.
Strengthening cultural identity
Representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Spain and Portugal stated that the works are intended to “complete and ennoble the façade of the Diocesan Cathedral in Madrid through the use of natural stone and decorative elements inspired by the Brancovenesque style, one of the most representative styles of Romanian architecture”.
According to the statement, these decorative additions will allow “the cathedral façade to acquire an authentically Romanian artistic and spiritual expression”, thereby strengthening the cultural and religious identity of the Romanian community in Spain and promoting Romanian architectural heritage within the European space.
The funding approved by the Department for Romanians Everywhere amounts to approximately 323,000 euros.
