Bessarabia Metropolis Synod marks Metropolitan Petru’s 35th anniversary, approves new church initiatives

The local Synod of the Metropolis of Bessarabia convened in Chișinău on September 1, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of the episcopal ordination of His Eminence Petru, Archbishop of Chișinău, Metropolitan of Bessarabia and Exarch of the Territories.

Alongside Metropolitan Petru, the meeting was attended by Bishop Antonie of Bălți, Bishop Veniamin of Southern Bessarabia, and Assistant Bishop Nectarie of Bogdania.

After the Divine Liturgy, the hierarchs held their synodal session, adopting four significant decisions for the Metropolis of Bessarabia.

One of the resolutions was to propose the inclusion of Saint Kallinikos of Edessa in the calendar of the Romanian Orthodox Church, with his feast day on August 8.

The Synod also decided to launch a local branch of Trinitas radio and television in the Republic of Moldova.

On social matters, the hierarchs reaffirmed the Church’s stance of political neutrality, stressing that it does not support any party but encourages believers to exercise their civic rights responsibly, promoting the common good and Christian values.

The bishops of the Metropolis of Bessarabia expressed gratitude to Patriarch Daniel of Romania and to the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church for their ongoing support—both in organising centenary events of the Metropolis and in proclaiming the local canonisation of Bessarabian Saints Heraclius and Alexander.
