Great-grandniece of Romanian Confessor Saint creates icon for National Cathedral

The mosaic portrait of Saint Elijah Lăcătușu, a newly canonised Romanian Confessor Priest of the 20th century, that will be placed inside Romania’s National Cathedral, was created by the Saint’s great-grandniece, Andreea Daria Guran.

“This gesture is at once a gift from today’s generation to that of yesterday, and a testimony that holiness is not lost in the mists of time, but is reborn in every act through which we honour it,” the National Cathedral’s communication team wrote on Facebook.

“For me, Saint Elijah Lăcătușu is like an uncle and an unseen support, and while creating this icon, I always felt his help and blessing,” artist Andreea Daria Guran told Basilica.ro.

“Every step, every piece of mosaic was placed with emotion, prayer, and gratitude for the strength I received from above. That is why I would not want the merit for this work to be attributed to me,” she emphasised.

The young artist graduated from the National University of Arts in Bucharest and has been part of the National Cathedral’s team of painters for about two years. She hopes to continue working in the field of sacred art.

Among the mosaic icons she has worked on for the National Cathedral is also that of the Holy Martyr Daria, her patron saint.
