International Youth Day: Green Skills for Youth is this year’s theme

This year’s International Youth Day, marked on Saturday, August 12, has the theme “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World”.

It outlines the role of young people in the green transition to an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world.

Green skills are defined as “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”.

The International Youth Day was established on December 17, 1999 by the United Nations General Assembly, with the purpose of celebrating the potential of young people as partners in the actual global society.

On this observance day, the UN General Assembly recommended organizing activities to promote the UN Action Program for Youth.

The UN has involved youth since 1965 by promoting among them the ideals of peace, mutual respect and friendship among people.

Over time, the United Nations has promoted three basic themes related to youth: participation, development and peace.
