Bucharest Faculty of Orthodox Theology Ex Dean Rev Stefan Buchiu awarded the Patriarchal Cross

His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel on Wednesday honoured the ex-dean of the Patriarch Justinian Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest Rev. Stefan Buchiu with the highest distinction in the Romanian Patriarchate, the Patriarchal Cross.

The event took place at the Romanian Saints’ Hall of the patriarchal residence.

As noted by the Patriarch in his speech, this award was given for the over ten year activity as dean of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest.

‘The highest distinction in the Romanian Patriarchate is usually given to those who have built a new church, have restored an older church building, or have developed ample works of spiritual edification,’ Patriarch Daniel said October 3.

His Beatitude pointed to ‘the thorough theological education of Prof. Rev. Stefan Buchiu, his rich academic experience and his vast pastoral activity.’

Honorary Diocesan Vicar

In addition to the award, Rev. Stefan Buchiu was appointed Honorary Diocesan Vicar of the Bucharest Archdiocese with duties related to consultation and representation in the theological, educational, and cultural fields.

The decision was made by the Standing Diocesan Council of the Bucharest Archdiocese during its working session on October 2, 2018.

‘As Honorary Diocesan Vicar, Prof. Buchiu may represent the Archdiocese of Bucharest and the Romanian Patriarchate at theological, educational and cultural meetings, and will be able to make proposals to intensify similar activities,’ Patriarch Daniel noted.

In turn, Rev. Stefan Buchiu expressed his deep gratitude for the award and the honorary title saying that he will make all the efforts and use his entire experience to intensify the theological, educational and cultural activities.

Rev. Stefan Buchiu is a professor of Dogmatics at the Patriarch Justinian Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Bucharest, an institution he led as dean until the end of September 2018.
