World Social Work Day: Building together the change we need

Social workers around the world celebrate their accomplishments on Tuesday, when World Social Work Day is marked.

The initiative to celebrate World Social Work Day was endorsed by member organisations of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) at its General Assembly in Adelaide, Australia, in 2004. The date was agreed at the General Assembly in Brazil in 2008, with the day to be marked every year on the third Tuesday of March.

The idea originated in the 1980s with the Federation’s representatives to the United Nations.

The theme of this year’s edition is “Buen Vivir:  Shared Future for Transformative Change”, which emphasises the need for social workers to adopt innovative, community-led approaches that are grounded in indigenous wisdom and harmonious coexistence with nature.

The theme also serves as a timely reminder of the transformative role social workers play in driving positive change in their communities.

The 2024 World Conference on Social Work and Social Development is organized this Tuesday in Panama. The theme of the event is “Respecting diversity through joint social action”.

“It is important for social work to recognise that sustainable change has resulted from mass movements where diverse populations have worked together for common interests,” is written in the background document of this year’s World Social Work Day.

“It is also important to recognise that all political actions are underpinned by cultural beliefs and worldviews that need to be considered in co-building an eco-social world.”
