Văratec Monastery is rebuilding two houses destroyed by a devastating fire

Văratec Monastery in Neamț County, Romania, will rebuild two monastic houses destroyed by a devastating fire late last month.

The fire is believed to have started after an electrical short circuit in a sewing machine, said the Neamț County Emergency Response Unit officials.

In a short time, most likely due to the wind, the flames spread and the damage was very high. The flames consumed the two dwellings with a total area of about 380 square meters and the goods inside.

Firefighters battled the blaze for four hours: “The intervention was a lengthy one, given the affected area and the large amount of combustible material,” the Neamț fire brigade announced on Facebook.

Văratec Monastery is linked to the name of Bălașa Herescu (1757-1842), a religious sister at the Topolița Hermitage with the name of Sister Olimpiada. Advised by Abbot Paisie Velichkovsky of the Neamț Monastery, she founded a small hermitage in the Văratec clearing some time between 1781 and 1785.
