Tokyo Romanian priest to inaugurate Japan’s first Orthodox cemetery

Established in January in Yamanashi by the “Great Martyr George” Romanian Parish in Tokyo, the first Orthodox cemetery in Japan will be inaugurated on Saturday, May 25, when a blessing service will be officiated.

The announcement was made on the Facebook page of the Romanian parish in Tokyo, a community under the care of Father Daniel Corîu.

The blessing service will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by a fraternal agape meal.

The land for the Orthodox cemetery in Yamanashi was leased by the Romanian community in Japan and the Association of Burial Desirers in Japan.

The price of a burial plot is approximately 250,000 yen, equivalent to 1,500 Euros.

At the same time, the Romanian Parish in Tokyo intends to bring a wooden church from Romania to serve as a chapel for the cemetery.

“We are determined to preserve the tradition and teachings of the Orthodox Church intact and to allow the body to ‘return to where it originated, until the common Resurrection, that is, in the earth,’ also here in Japan,” Father Daniel Corîu conveyed in 2022.
