The Romanian Patriarchate Supports the European Civic Initiative Entitled “One of Us”

The Romanian Patriarchate supports the European civic initiative entitled “One of Us” designed to raise the level of juridical protection of the dignity, right to life and integrity of every human being ever since conception in the European Union.

“One of Us” civic initiative asks the European Union to cease the financing of the activities concerning the destruction of the human embryos, especially in the fields of research, and of the aid for development and public good health (www.oneofus.eu). Faithful to its faith that life begins from the moment of conception, the Romanian Patriarchate draws the attention to the fact that the destruction of the human embryos is an unacceptable act from a spiritual-moral point of view.

In this sense, the Representation of the Romanian Patriarchate at the European Institutions and the Commission of the Episcopates of Europe (Roman Catholic) (COMECE) actively supported the amending in the European Parliament of the articles concerning the ethic aspects (especially the financing of the research on human embryos) of the new frame programme of research 2014-2020 – Orizont 2020.

Mentioned in article 11 (4) of the Treaty on the European Union, a European civic initiative must be supported by at least one million citizens of the European Union coming from at least 7 member states out of the 27, in order to invite the European Commission to draft a legislative proposal suitable in the field.

Any Romanian citizen over 18 can support “One of Us” European civic initiative signing the support form that can be downloaded and printed from the websites of the Romanian Patriarchate: www.patriarhia.ro, www.basilica.ro, www.ziarullumina.ro and www.orthodoxero.eu or filling in the electronic online form at the address: https://ec.europa.eu/citizens-initiative/ECI-2012-000005/public/index.do?lang=ro.

We urge the eparchies of the Romanian Patriarchate as well as the organisations and foundations operating with the blessing of the Romanian Orthodox Church to support and publicize the “One of Us” European civic initiative in order to gather a large number of signatures.

Your support has an outstanding importance for defending the right to life and recognition of the human embryo as person from the moment of conception.
