The opening of the first Orthodox Theological School in Cyprus

The first Orthodox Theological School in Cyprus was inaugurated Tuesday evening, 15 September 2015, by His Excellency Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Republic of Cyprus, and by His Beatitude Chrysostom II, Archbishop of Cyprus.

During the event, the president of Cyprus stated that the establishment of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus takes place in a period that needs luminous examples. His Excellency also promised that the government will support the new educational institution and the Church of Cyprus.

On the occasion of the opening, His Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, addressed a message of congratulation to the Archbishop and the Holy Synod of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus. In his message, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew confessed his joy and satisfaction about the decision of the Church of Cyprus to found a Theological School.

“The establishment of this Faculty”, Archbishop Chrysostom said, “represented a growing need of the Church of Cyprus to cultivate its own Theological Education”.

“We express our joy and jubilation because we see our ardent desire fulfilled”, His Beatitude said showing the fact that “the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus will aim for promoting the ecclesial spirit, educating in Christ and the hearts of clergy”.

Under the coordination of the Church, this Faculty will bind scientific education with spiritual life, promoting the cultivation of the critical thinking.

“The Church doesn’t await for her theologians to change the world. Nor to turn the social structures over. She awaits to offer that sparkle that becomes a flame in the hearts of people, in order to meet Christ; to prove that the Church isn’t a museum where treasures are kept, nor another ideology among other, but she is our family, our place that awaits for us”
