The Archdiocese of Iași is building a 750,000-Euro maternity home for women in pregnancy crisis

Pro Vita Iași, the Pro-Life Department of the Archdiocese of Iași, is building a regional maternity home for pregnant women from the eparchy. The Church will compensate the lack of support from families or from the partner when they are faced with an unexpected pregnancy. Pro Vita Iași celebrates through this landmark project a decade of pro-life activity.

“Unfortunately, most often the woman is left to face alone a difficult decision. And here is where men need to intervene and share the burden of responsibility, protecting life,” declared Father Cosmin Brînză, project coordinator.

A man can not be pro-abortion, he added, “because he is given by God the gift of being a protector and helper of the woman, while abortion acts in the opposite way.”

“St Emilia” Maternity Home Iași will have the capacity to serve simultaneously 12 women in pregnancy crisis from three surrounding counties: Iași, Botoșani and Neamț.

During their stay, mothers will benefit from all the material support they need for themselves and their children and will be offered counselling and training to help them reintegrate socially.

The home will function based on the concept of home care: it will be like a house, not like a social centre, and women will be counselled and supported to manage themselves and to win their independence.

We want to offer help, not to judge, we want to manifest our solidarity,” Father Cosmin Brînză added.

The mothers will be hosted for two years at the home. If at the end of the period they will have a work contract and the child registered for kindergarten, they will be hosted for free, for other 6-12 months, in the protected apartments the archdiocese has in Iași, Botoșani and Piatra Neamț.

The building will be raised on a 1,000 square meters property of approximately 200,000 Euros, offered by the Archdiocese of Iași. The eparchy covered the 30,000-Euro costs for the feasibility studies.

At present, the department works on completing the technical project, on the interior design project, and on the communication and fundraising campaign for the building itself.

The building will have a usable area of 347 square meters. Building work will be started in June 2022 and its estimated cost is over 550,000 Euros.

Saint Emilia, the patron of the maternity home, is celebrated on January 1. She was an exemplary Christian mother, who gave the world three saints: St. Basil the Great, Venerable Macrina the Younger and St. Peter, Bishop of Sebaste.
