Her Royal Highness Princess Maria Alexandra Victoria was born on 29 October 1875, at Eastwell Park, Kent County, England. Princess Maria was daughter to Alfred of Great Britain and Ireland, Prince of Saxa-Coburg-Gotha, Duke of Edinburg (1844-1900) and to Great Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia (1853-1920).

On 10 January 1893, she married Prince Heir of Romania, Ferdinand. She was the Queen of Romania from 1914–1927. She died on 18 July 1938, at Sinaia.

Following Queen Maria’s wish, her heart was laid in Stella Maris chapel of Balcic, which she had founded. Two years later, after the Cadrilater was ceded to Bulgaria, the urn was moved to Bran Castle, where it was taken from during the communist regime. In March 1971, the case was included in the patrimony of the National History Museum of Romania.
